In Friday's Week 9 playoff game, the Phillipsburg Panthers came out in dominant fashion and got the win, beating the Lakin Broncs by a score of 49-26.
The Panthers received the opening kickoff and with 9:06 left in the first they took the lead with an 11 yard run from Ty Sides. The extra point attempt was no good leaving the score 6-0. Lakin fumbled their first possession and the Panthers recovered the ball. On the next play, Sides scored on a 52 yard run extending the lead to 13-0. With ten seconds left in the first quarter, Sides connected with Kagan Keeten for a touchdown and again hit Keeten for the two point conversion making it 21-0. Lakin would get on the board with 1:10 left in the half but would trail the Panthers 27-8 at halftime.
Lakin came out in the second half with something to prove and scored on the opening possession making it 27-14 with 5:44 remaining in the third. The Panthers picked up right where they left off in the first half and on the first play from scrimmage Sides took it 85 yards for another Panther touchdown making it 35-14. Clint Gower added another touchdown with 49 seconds left in the third making it 42-14. Lakin scored with 8:17 left in the game making it 42-20. Devin Johnson added the final touchdown to the Panthers score with 3:29 left making it 49-20. Lakin scored on their last possession making the final score 49-26.
The Panthers now 5-4 will host an improved Beloit Trojans team this Friday, November 6th for the Regional matchup with a 7 pm kickoff. The Panthers defeated the Trojans earlier in the year 49-28.
