Museum News (July 22, 2024)
The Community Room was turned into a beautiful botanical experience last Tuesday and Wednesday. Instructor Laurie Albin led participants on a floral expedition through watercolor painting. Demonstrating some of her favorite techniques and methods, Laurie showed participants how to paint expressive flower interpretations by working in many layers, to create a world of textures, bright colors, and depth. Attending painters truly blossomed under Laurie’s expert care.
Sometimes things just line up! Last Friday, Logan Manor was scheduled to come visit our current exhibition, Sonic Sensation, and as luck would have it, I received a last-minute invitation to film a tour of the LIFE Project. It worked out perfectly. I was returning from the LIFE Project tour as the Manor residents were arriving. We had lots of fun exploring sound together! Making 3D sound waves and Music in Motion were popular attractions. Some of the residents even tested out the Scream Chamber. They were almost as excited as kids when they crossed the threshold to let out their loudest roars. However, the highlight of their visit was not the exhibit (even though it is wonderful). These folks were so excited to hear about the LIFE Project—their new home. I was able to show them videos of their individual rooms, dining area, and more. They loved all the details, the crown molding, the beautiful light fixtures, the elegant tile work—really, they just loved everything they saw. Seeing them light up and hearing their excitement were some of the best sounds I have ever heard!
Lori Nicolaus, July Artist of the Month, has super cute and creative embroidery items for sale. Visitors have been admiring and buying lots of her goods. Lori’s work is well constructed and very reasonably priced. If you are in the market for children’s gifts, stop in Lori, just might have what you need.
Sonic Sensation will remain on view at the Hansen Museum through July 28th. This hands-on exhibition has been a real hit with visitors. It is a fun educational experience exploring the science and physics of sound. There is still time to discover the awesome power of sound! Create sound waves in a tube. Match mystery sounds. Test your hearing. Sort high and low pitches on a turntable. Locate a cricket and cat in a kitchen just by listening. Mix a soundtrack. Launch a sound wave toward an eardrum. See how loud you can roar in the Scream Chamber! Visit www.hansenmuseum.org for more information.
The Museum is open Mon. through Fri. 9-12 and 1-4; Sat. 9-12 & 1-5; Sun. and holidays 1-5. We are closed Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Day. We are handicapped accessible, and admission is always free thanks to the generous support of the Dane G. Hansen Foundation. For more information or if you have questions, please contact us at 785-689-4846. We hope to see and hear you at the Museum soon!
