Phillipsburg speech and drama crew compete again
The Phillipsburg forensics team continued the young forensics season with a trip to Sylvan-Lucas for their third tournament of the season. As a team, PHS finished in second place out of 12 teams. Norton placed first, and Natoma placed third.
Fifteen entries for the Panthers medaled by placing in the top six of their events.. Lydia Walker stayed undefeated in impromptu speaking by earning another gold in that event. Walker also placed second in prose and fifth in informative. Walker led the team by earning 45 points.
The second highest individual point-earner was Shae Baker who scored 33 points by placing second in oration and third in impromptu. Those placing also qualified Baker for state competition in May.
Jhett Johnson also contributed significantly with a third place finish in humorous solo and a fifth place medal in POI. Autumn Hueneke double-medaled by placing fourth in POI and fifth in serious solo.
Other fifth place finishers included Kadence Grote in poetry, Hannah Umbarger in oration, and Paige Ehm in extemp. Savannah Bretton placed sixth in poetry, and Carter Grote placed sixth in extemp.
Freshmen Zoe Sharpnack and Skyler Sharpnack earned their first trip to finals in duet acting and finished seventh.
“Every tournament is a valuable experience for our team, especially the younger students who are just now getting the hang of how tournaments and how competitions go, ” Coach Kim Pakkebier said. “I’m seeing some exciting results, and I’m hoping to continue the season strongly.”
Other students who helped earn points for the team include Emerson Grote, Nick Hale, and Ashtyn Josh.
The PHS forensics team will compete in Natoma on February 26th for their next tournament.
