It’s always a joy to see families visiting the Hansen Museum, and we are especially delighted when parents bring young children to explore our exhibits. While it can be a challenge for parents to keep a watchful eye and gently remind their little ones to "look but not touch," bringing children into museums at a young age is incredibly important. Fostering an early appreciation for cultural institutions like museums and libraries plants the seeds for a lifelong love of learning and discovery. Much like attending church with young children—where the experience may be more about the lesson than the immediate enjoyment—visiting museums early teaches the value and importance of these places.

Last Saturday, we were thrilled to welcome two young families to our current exhibition, A Place to Call Home. Both sets of parents patiently followed their energetic youngsters from exhibit to exhibit, often dividing and conquering so that each child had their own attentive guide. Although it’s likely the parents didn’t get to fully absorb every display, their selfless approach allowed their children to thoroughly explore and enjoy the Museum. Rest assured, while the parents may have missed a few details, their children left with full hearts and wide eyes. We encourage you: bring your little ones—after all, they are our patrons of the future!

This past weekend also brought a creative spark to the Museum with two Magic of Painting classes led by the talented Hope Blakely. A certified Bob Ross instructor, Hope taught participants the wet-on-wet oil painting technique with a fun, relaxed style that made the experience feel almost magical. On Saturday, attendees painted Out in the Valley, a charming scene featuring a cozy cabin by a mountain stream. Sunday's class focused on Night Ocean, a moody and dramatic seascape illuminated by a brilliant moonlit sky. Participants left both sessions with not only beautiful paintings but also smiles and renewed spirits. Mark your calendars—Hope will return to teach again on June 21 and 22!
