Track team makes early morning trip to Scott City

The Phillipsburg varsity boys track team had an early morning trip to Scott City for their annual 88th relays. Fourteen teams attended ranging from all around Kansas, and the boys were able to pull out a 9th place finish among a variety of competition.
Field events began at 9:30, with jumpers, throwers, and vaulters starting their morning early. Junior Cleveland Corman competed in high jump and pole vault placing 9th with a jump of 5 '6 and coming in 11th with a vault of 11-0 feet even.
Finishing all in a row, long jumpers junior Tanner Horinek, Ej Hall, and sophomore Tyray Snyder came in 5th, 6th, and 7th. Horinek reached a distance of 20-5 feet and Hall not far behind jumped 20-4 feet. Snyder had a distance of 19-9 feet in long and an 11th place finish in triple with 37-8 feet.
Javelin thrower junior Blake Buresh had a 4th place finish and a PR of 156-8 feet. Coming in 5th place behind Buresh was sophomore Zane Shields throwing 145-3 feet. Also competing in javelin was freshman Caleb Leidig throwing 142-9 feet and earning himself a 7th place finish.
Senior Kyron Hughes competed in the shot put throwing 39-4 and finishing 11th. Hughes also earned a 7th place finish in discus with a throw of 119-4 feet. Just in front of him, junior Blayze Christy threw a distance of 120-4 feet in discus and got a 6th place finishing spot.
There were no finalists in the open 100 and 200 meter relays, and senior Alex VanAllen managed to pull out a 15th place finish with a time of 56.40 in the open 400 meter dash. VanAllen also participated in the boys varsity 4x1 consisting of juniors Tanner Horinek, Ej Hall, and Colin Springer. The team pulled out a 9th place finish with a time of 46.31.
Having the highlight of the meet, junior Tanner Horinek competed in the 110 hurdles setting a new meet record. Horinek earned himself a 4th place state rank and leads as a 2A competitor just as a junior. Finishing with a time of 14.57 and a new PR, Horinek beat senior Goodland all-star Linkon Cure who hadn’t lost in the 110 hurdles since sophomore year. Horinek also competed in the 300 hurdles but unfortunately fell short to Cure, getting a 2nd place finish with 40.44.
