Museum News (May 12, 2025)

There’s something extra special about the Hansen Museum Plaza this spring — just take a drive by and see for yourself! The lawn looks absolutely stunning, thanks to the tireless work of our Grounds and Maintenance Supervisor, Dave Schneider. With great care and dedication, Dave has transformed the grounds into a lush, emerald sea. He’s gone the extra mile, removing the outdated landscaping along Main Street and restoring the area to healthy, vibrant grass—well done, Dave!
And Dave isn’t slowing down anytime soon. This week, he’ll be planting five new trees to replace those removed by Solida’s after the harsh spring blizzard put the final nail in their coffin. These new plantings will not only replenish the greenery lost but also enhance the natural beauty around the square. Some trees will fill bare areas to provide welcome shade and structure to the landscape, while others will restore symmetry to the plaza’s design. Dave’s thoughtful planning ensures that future generations will enjoy the same vibrant scenery we admire today. As always, we invite you to take a scenic drive to admire the progress — and while you’re here, step inside the museum for an experience that will take you back in time.
Our current exhibition, A Place to Call Home, explores the compelling stories of pioneers who traveled west in search of opportunity, stability, and new beginnings. Why did so many choose Central Kansas as their final destination? The answers lie in the region’s promise of land, open skies, and the inherent draw of this heartland to those who sought independence and prosperity. Through historic photographs, artifacts, and personal accounts, this exhibit paints a vivid picture of the grit, hope, and determination it took to carve out a new life on the prairie. Visitors can also explore the challenges of early homesteading, from sod houses to droughts, and discover how communities formed and flourished. It’s a journey through time that honors the spirit of those early settlers — one that continues to inspire today.
As you explore the museum, don’t miss our delightful Artist of the Month display featuring Angie Berens from Colby, KS. Angie is the creative force behind Offerings LLC, a small business with a big heart. Her handcrafted bath and body products are made with all-natural ingredients, gentle on your skin, wonderfully fragrant, and priced to please. Whether you’re shopping for yourself or looking for a thoughtful gift, Angie’s offerings are a true treat. Her display will be available through the end of May — be sure to stop by and see (and smell!) for yourself. You may just find your new favorite lotion or soap, all while supporting a talented local artisan.
