Astronaut Exhibit Launches Learning and Adventure at the Hansen Museum

After a successful installation mission—complete with a few distress signals and plenty of teamwork—the Astronaut exhibit has officially landed at the Hansen Museum. Created by Imagine Exhibitions in collaboration with Scitech, this hands-on experience offers an exciting, educational journey through the world of space exploration.

Designed to inspire future explorers and curious minds alike, Astronaut is divided into three themed zones: Training Center, Rocket Launch, and Space Station. Each section features interactive stations, challenges, and displays that simulate the realities of becoming—and being—an astronaut.

In the Training Center, visitors begin their journey by stepping into the shoes of a would-be astronaut. From experiencing the effects of G-forces on fine motor skills in Heavy Hands, to testing communication skills in Houston, We Have a Problem, participants quickly learn that space missions demand both mental sharpness and physical stamina. The Team Astronaut game promotes collaboration and fast thinking, while Who Wants to Be an Astronaut? quizzes visitors on space trivia with lifeline-style assistance.

Guests also get a feel for astronaut attire in Space Clothing, where they can don a flight suit and pose with life-size images of current and experimental space suits. Meanwhile, Pick Your Team explores the psychology behind selecting a successful space crew, highlighting the importance of leadership and balanced personalities.

The adventure continues in the Rocket Launch zone. Climb aboard a simulated rocket, count down, and prepare for blastoff in an immersive experience that hints at the adrenaline and force required to leave Earth. Nearby, the Projectile Lander challenge lets visitors test their skills by launching a capsule and trying to land it precisely using parachutes and adjustable variables—demonstrating the delicate balance of math, physics, and engineering behind space landings.

Finally, the Space Station invites visitors to explore life beyond Earth’s atmosphere. Exhibits like Space Life and Space Food reveal how astronauts tackle everyday challenges such as hygiene and meals in microgravity. Visitors can watch videos, make food selections, and better understand how even the most basic routines require careful planning and adaptability in space.

Whether learning about the physical demands of re-entry, trying to solve communication breakdowns mid-mission, or selecting the perfect crew, Astronaut is both fun and informative—offering a one-of-a-kind opportunity to engage with science, technology, and teamwork in action.

In addition to the excitement of Astronaut, the Hansen Museum is thrilled to announce the return of its Mixed Media Painting classes, taught by Sandy Seamone. Held at the Logan Youth Center on July 19 & 20, each day offers a different painting experience. Saturday’s session will feature Warm Glow, a peaceful landscape, while Sunday’s class will focus on Little Old Truck, a nostalgic scene. Each class is $75 per participant, with discounts available for Patron and Sustaining Museum Members. All skill levels are welcome!

Please note that sidewalk ramp installation is currently underway at the Museum to enhance accessibility. Visitors are welcome to walk on the grass to reach the entrance during business hours. And don’t forget—admission is always free, thanks to the continued support of the Dane G. Hansen Foundation. Come explore the wonders of space and creativity at the Hansen Museum—where curiosity takes flight. We hope to see you at the Museum!
