The Panther publication staffs competed at the Kansas Scholastic Press Association state contest on April 2. The entries were judged by scholastic educators and professionals in journalism and the results were released on Saturday, May 2 at the KSPA State Celebration in Lawrence.

After winning their regional, the Panthers sent an impressive number of entries to the state contest--each member of the staff qualified in at least one event.

With the reclassification to 3A, the entries at state were judged individually with all 3A and 4A schools. Team placings were then determined by class. In the end, Phillipsburg had secured a third place finish, only missing runner up by one placing. As a team, however, Phillipsburg was the Multimedia Sweepstakes runner up.

"I'm extremely proud of this group. We only had two veteran yearbook staff members and four veteran newspaper members, so to place this high with a majority of new staff and at the 3A level is impressive. Much of the judging is subjective so results depend heavily on personal assessments. This group performed well with the inexperience and change of level," Advisor Robin Sides said.

Individual placings included:

Emalee Russell: Digital Illustration, 5th place

Kamrie Chestnut: News Page Design, 5th, Social Media, 5th

Ana Schemper: Social Media 5th, Cutline Writing, 3rd

Mady Runyon: Cutline Writing, 1st

Lydia Walker: Video PSA, 1st, Voiceover 4th

Kadence Grote: Video Story Package 3rd

William Jessup: Academic Photography 2nd

Valorie Solida: News Writing 3rd
