Phillipsburg Tennis captures regional title

On Friday, Oct. 10, the tennis team traveled to WaKeeney to compete in regional play. Fighting hard, the team finished on top, earning themselves a first-place plaque.

In the singles division, senior Gabby Poels started with a first-round bye. During the second round, Poels defeated Price of Ingalls with scores of 6-0, 6-0, securing a spot at state. Poels then defeated Nowlin of Victoria with scores of 7-5, 6-2.

Also in the singles division, junior Valorie Solida conquered Wynn of Trego 6-0, 6-2. Solida then dominated Knoll of Osborne in the second round, earning a set spot at state with scores of 6-0, 6-1. Solida moved up the bracket, defeating Marcell of Russell 6-1, 6-2. In the final round, Poels and Solida went up against each other for first and second place. Poels defeated Solida with scores of 7-6 (4), 7-5.

In the doubles division, juniors Azariah Christy and Lydia Walker defeated Puga and Nickols of Norton 6-1, 6-1, leading them to play Daubert and Malsam of Trego. Trego went on to defeat the Panthers 6-2, 6-0.

The other doubles team, consisting of senior Kadence Grote and junior Miley Moffatt, started off strong, defeating Howell and Marquardt of Tribune 6-4, 1-6, 12-10. In the second round, the duo went up against the Riner sisters of Osborne, with scores of 1-6, 0-6.

For the third round, the Panthers’ doubles teams competed against each other to determine who would secure a seat at state. Christy and Walker came out on top, scoring 6-2, 6-0. Securing the win, the duo moved on to play Toon and Kuhn of Victoria. With scores of 6-4, 6-2, Christy and Walker earned themselves fifth place.
