Phillipsburg Hosts Northwest District Speech Contest
On Wednesday, Feb. 4th, Phillipsburg FFA hosted and competed at the Northwest district Speech Contest. This contest was a Leadership Development Event(LDE), so the members who competed were required to write and recite their informative speech to match a certain time limit.
FFA members who competed in prepared public speaking, researched agricultural or FFA-related topics and delivered organized speeches they had practiced ahead of time. Those who competed in the extemporaneous speaking event were challenged to think quickly by drawing a topic and presenting a short speech with limited preparation time. Judges evaluated participants on content, delivery, organization, and overall effectiveness.
The speech contest is an important part of FFA, helping members develop strong communication skills that will benefit them in future careers and leadership roles. There were 100 members who competed in the prepared public speaking and 12 who competed in the extemporaneous speaking division.
Phillipsburg FFA Advisor Allison Dix said, “Everyone should be able to speak in front of people. No matter what jobs these members will have in their future, they will be talking to people all the time.”
All the members competing in this contest have to put a lot of time and effort into their speech.
“We start writing speeches in October and then the kids edit them for a couple weeks then most of January the members work on reciting and perfecting their speeches and to finish it off the members perform their speeches at the contest.” Dix said.
