Blast Off! Students Launch Into Learning…The Hansen Museum has had an exciting start to the school year with three school groups visiting during the first semester of classes—and what a blast it has been! Students had the opportunity to dive into the world of astronauts, learning everything it takes for a person to train, prepare, and ultimately make the journey into space.
One of the most popular stops continues to be the Human Centrifuge, where students experience the pull of G-forces on their own bodies, simulating what astronauts feel during launch. Another highlight is the Team Astronaut Challenge, which emphasizes the importance of teamwork and effective communication. Students quickly discovered that active listening is the key to mission success—a lesson that goes far beyond the space program.
Two of the three groups also had the chance to participate in a hands-on design challenge: building a landing module to protect a fragile payload. Using just four popsicle sticks, one balloon, a plastic cup, five cotton balls, three lengths of string, and one hard-boiled egg, students were tasked with designing a module that could land safely on a target from six feet in the air. The ingenuity on display was inspiring—no two designs looked alike, even though all had the same materials. While more eggs cracked than not, the challenge sparked laughter, problem-solving, and plenty of “aha!” moments. Afterward, students compared their creations, analyzing what design choices helped preserve structural integrity and why others didn’t quite stick the landing.
These engaging, hands-on activities make STEM concepts come alive, and the Hansen Museum is thrilled to host even more schools in the coming weeks. To date, approximately 350 students are scheduled to visit before the Astronaut exhibition comes to a close. We look forward to watching many more young learners experience the wonder of space exploration right here in our galleries.
In addition to the excitement of the Astronaut exhibit, the Museum is also featuring our September Artist of the Month, Aimee Sharp of Concordia, Kansas. Aimee is a talented wreath maker with beautiful designs for every season and holiday, all available for purchase throughout the month. She also creates the sweetest little hairbows that make perfect gifts. Be sure to stop by to admire—and maybe take home—her lovely creations.
The Hansen Museum is proud to bring art, science, and imagination together under one roof.
