Panther forensics team claims Norton tournament championship

The Phillipsburg forensics team traveled to Norton on Saturday, February 14th, for their second tournament of the season. Of the 14 teams that competed, Phillipsburg placed on top with 280 points and brought home the championship plaque. Sylvan-Lucas placed second with 228 points, and Smith Center placed third with 181 points.

Thirteen entries for the Panthers medaled by placing in the top six of their events.. Lydia Walker brought home two golds with first place finishes in impromptu speaking and prose. Jhett Johnson also earned two gold medals with first place finished in humorous solo and program of oral interpretation (POI). Walker and Johnson each earned 55 points to help the Panthers earn first as a team.

Silver medalists included Hannah Umbarger in oration and Savannah Bretton in POI. Umbarger also placed sixth in POI.

Bringing home a bronze medal was Kadence Grote in humorous solo. Kadence Grote also placed fourth in POI.

Carter Bogart earned two medals by placing fourth in extemporaneous and fifth in oration. Carter Grote also won two medals: fifth in extemporaneous and sixth in humorous solo.

“We had individuals place much higher at this tournament, and several of our new team members gained some valuable experience today,” Coach Kim Pakkebier said. “Placing first as a team is always a great accomplishment, but I especially enjoy seeing the students' excitement and watching their confidence grow.”

The PHS forensics team will compete in Sylvan on February 19th for their next tournament.
