The Hansen Museum gallery is currently filled wall to wall with local art! Our Artist of the Month space features the work of local fiber artist Connie Albin, while the remainder of the gallery showcases student artwork in the 49th Annual High School Art Show. The gallery is truly brimming with engaging pieces, from imaginative student creations to Connie’s beautiful—and practical—handmade kitchen accessories. It is a complete celebration of Kansas artists, and it is wonderful to see.

One of the very best parts of the High School Art Show is the opportunity we have to interact with students from area schools. Sometimes this happens while they are installing their work, and other times when they return with family members to see their art on display. Their talent and imagination never cease to amaze us. It is always fascinating to hear students talk about their creative processes and learn what messages—if any—they hope to convey through their work. Many students are deeply engaged with current events and use art as a powerful way to share their thoughts and perspectives.

This year, the Museum is trying something new. Rather than hosting the traditional Sunday afternoon preview of the High School Art Show—which has often made it difficult for students and instructors to attend—we have decided to hold a weekday gathering specifically for students. Our hope is that by scheduling this event during the school day, more students will be able to experience the thrill of seeing their artwork hanging in a professional gallery alongside the work of accomplished and well-known artists.

During this student gathering, we plan to offer collaborative creative activities, invite a student from each school to speak about one of their pieces in the show, and provide time for students and instructors to mix, mingle, and share ideas and encouragement.

We tip our hats to the instructors who make the effort to incorporate the Hansen Museum High School Art Show into their busy schedules. It takes time beyond their everyday responsibilities, and we deeply appreciate their commitment to inspiring students and providing opportunities for them to exhibit their work in a professional setting.

We invite everyone to come see this outstanding display of local and student art. We hope to see you at the Museum soon. The Hansen Museum is located at 110 W. Main Street in Logan, Kansas. Hours are Monday–Friday, 9:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m. and 1:00–4:00 p.m.; Saturday, 9:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m. and 1:00–5:00 p.m.; and Sunday and holidays, 1:00–5:00 p.m. The Museum is fully handicap-accessible, and thanks to the Dane G. Hansen Foundation, admission is always free. For more information, please call 785-689-4846.
