Museum News (Oct. 20, 2025)

Over the weekend, the Magic of Paintering class at the Hansen Museum transformed the Community Room from a tropical paradise into a tranquil English cottage by the sea. Thirty-two painters donned their smocks and set their creative hands in motion, producing a beautiful array of paintings. Instructor Hope Blakely did a remarkable job guiding participants through each step, inspiring confidence and artistry throughout the weekend.
The atmosphere in the Community Room was filled with joy, inspiration, and learning as painters of all levels explored new techniques and shared creative energy. At the conclusion of each class, the Museum invited participants to complete surveys about their experience. Every survey shared one enthusiastic message: “When can you get Hope back for another class?” In response, we’re pleased to announce that Hope will return to teach again on January 24 and 25, 2026. The paintings for those classes were chosen democratically by the participants, who voted on their favorite options. Saturday’s class will paint the ancient shell of a castle surrounded by mystical trees and greenery, while Sunday’s project will feature a misty waterfall set on a cloudy day, evoking the calm beauty of a foggy morning.
We encourage visitors to come explore the Museum’s current exhibition, From Miniatures to Monuments: The Artwork of Sondra Jonson. This captivating show celebrates the extraordinary range of Jonson’s talent, from her delicate miniature sculptures to her monumental public works. Through bronze, resin, and mixed media, Jonson captures both the intimate details of everyday life and the grandeur of human expression. The exhibition offers a rare glimpse into the creative journey of one of Nebraska’s most respected sculptors and will be on view through November 30th.
The next learning event at the Museum will be a K-State Research and Extension Kokedama Class on October 28th at 11:00 a.m. This hands-on workshop, taught by Simple Morea, will guide participants in creating their own Kokedama—a Japanese-style “moss ball” garden art. Each participant will take home a beautiful, living creation. In addition to the class, the public is invited to browse and purchase from Simple Morea’s selection of specialty tropical houseplants. Pre-registration is preferred. To register, please contact the Phillips-Rooks Extension District at 785-425-6851 or email rbrooke@ksu.edu.
