Hansen Museum Presents: From Miniatures to Monuments by Sondra Jonson

The Hansen Museum is thrilled to announce the successful installation of its newest exhibition, From Miniatures to Monuments: The Artwork of Sondra Jonson. This inspiring showcase celebrates the extraordinary talent and dedication of sculptor Sondra Jonson, whose works range from intricate miniatures to breathtaking life-sized sculptures.

Jonson is widely acclaimed for her exceptional ability to capture the human form with both technical precision and emotional depth. The sculpting process is an arduous one, often involving multiple versions of each piece at various scales before the final, full-sized work is realized. Yet through every step of that process, Sondra invests herself completely—conducting extensive research and infusing each creation with heartfelt emotion.

Though bronze and clay may seem like unlikely mediums for tenderness, Jonson’s work reveals a remarkable sensitivity. Her sculptures are imbued with humanity, evoking genuine emotion from those who view them. Each piece stands as a testament to the care, compassion, and deep understanding she brings to her art.

In addition to her sculptures, Jonson is also celebrated for her beautiful mosaics, several of which are included in this exhibition. The Hansen Museum is honored to display these stunning examples of her artistry—works that combine color, texture, and light to create truly moving visual experiences.

On Sunday, October 12, the Museum hosted a Meet and Greet with Sondra Jonson. The event offered patrons and fans a unique opportunity to meet the artist, learn about her creative process, and gain insight into the inspiration behind her work. The afternoon was filled with engaging conversation and admiration for Jonson’s artistry and dedication.

The Museum is also excited to announce an upcoming K-State Research and Extension event: a Kokedama Class on October 28 at 11:00 a.m. This hands-on workshop, taught by Simple Morea, will guide participants in creating their own Kokedama—a Japanese-style “moss ball” garden art. Each participant will take home their own beautiful creation. In addition to the class, the public is invited to shop Simple Morea’s selection of specialty tropical houseplants. Pre-registration is preferred. To register, please contact the Phillips-Rooks Extension District at 785-425-6851 or email rbrooke@ksu.edu.

From Miniatures to Monuments will be on display at the Hansen Museum through November 30, 2026. Visitors are encouraged to experience this extraordinary exhibition celebrating the beauty, sensitivity, and enduring power of Sondra Jonson’s art.
