School field trips continue to bring energy and excitement to the Hansen Museum. Students are having fun while learning, and it is a joy to witness their enthusiasm. Many are reluctant to leave when their visit ends, so we encourage them to return with their families on the weekend. This coming weekend, September 27 and 28, will be the final opportunity to experience the ASTRONAUT exhibit at the Museum, so be sure to make note. Following the conclusion of this exhibit, the Museum will be closed September 30 through October 3 for deinstallation before preparing for the next display.

In other news, the Museum is beginning to receive beautiful winter and Christmas-themed quilts, wall hangings, table runners, and Christmas tree skirts for the Open Call Christmas Quilt Exhibit. The entries that have arrived so far have been a delight to see, and we look forward to many more. Submissions are open online at www.hansenmuseum.org/christmas-quilt-entries/ through November 7, 2025. If you need help submitting your entry, please call the Museum at 785-689-4846 and Shari will be glad to assist you in entering your quilt. Prizes totaling $3,225 will be awarded, including $1,000 for the Best in Show in the quilt category. This exhibition is open to quilters of all levels. Quilting is an art form rooted in heritage—passed down through generations from mothers and grandmothers who once quilted out of necessity but still produced works of great skill. Today, we celebrate this legacy and encourage its continuation.

On Wednesday, September 17, the Museum hosted a water bath canning class featuring fresh Colorado peaches. Participants learned the water bath canning method from start to finish and were able to take home two pint jars of their own freshly canned peaches. The class was taught by the knowledgeable Anna Schremmer, who did a remarkable job both educating and entertaining her class.

On Saturday, September 20, the Museum was pleased to host a basket weaving class led by fiber artist Marsha Jensen of Manhattan, Kansas. The featured project was “Logan’s Basket,” a tall basket with a handle and a ten-inch opening that Marsha first designed as an Artisan Demonstrator at the 2024 Arts and Crafts Fair. Participants spent the day weaving and, although each started with the same materials, no two baskets were alike. Differences in shape, height, and coloration gave each creation its own unique beauty, and the results were impressive. At the close of the workshop, participants enthusiastically requested that more basket weaving classes be offered in 2026. Photos from the class can be found on the Museum’s Facebook page.
