Museum News (October 6, 2025)

The Hansen Museum is a flurry of excitement this week as we install our newest exhibition, From Miniatures to Monuments: The Artwork of Sondra Jonson. After weeks of anticipation, we are thrilled to see Jonson’s remarkable sculptures coming to life within our galleries. Watching the gallery transform as Jonson’s sculptures take their places has been a joy—each piece, from small-scale studies to monumental works, tells a story of dedication, beauty, and craft. The exhibition opens to the public on Friday, October 10, and we are especially pleased to invite everyone to a Meet the Artist come-and-go event with Sondra Jonson on Saturday, October 12, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the Hansen Museum. It’s a wonderful opportunity to visit with the artist, learn more about her creative process, and see her breathtaking work up close.
Alongside this major exhibition, our fall Quilt Class begins this week with an orientation session. If you’ve been on the fence about joining, don’t worry, there’s still time to register! This year’s featured pattern is Trellis, a charming and versatile design, but participants are welcome to bring any project they’d like to work on with the help of our talented instructor, Janie Lowry. The class meets Tuesday evenings through November 18 and offers a wonderful opportunity to learn, create, and enjoy the company of fellow quilters. For registration details, please call 785-689-4846 or visit www.hansenmuseum.org.
We’re also delighted to announce the Hansen Museum’s first Open Call Christmas Quilt Exhibition! We’ve begun receiving some lovely entries, but we would love to see many more. Whether you’re an experienced quilter or just beginning, we invite you to share your talent by entering a quilt, table runner, wall hanging, or Christmas tree skirt. Participation is free, and the prizes are exceptional. This is a wonderful way to celebrate the holiday season while showcasing the creativity of our quilting community. If you have any questions or need help submitting your entry online, please call us—we’re happy to assist.
In addition to these exhibits and programs, visitors will enjoy a brand-new Artist of the Month display featuring metal artist Stephanie Taylor from Lawrence, Kansas. This is Stephanie’s first time exhibiting with us, and her whimsical outdoor and yard art pieces are sure to bring a smile. Her work adds a fun touch to the Museum—perfect for anyone looking to brighten their front door, garden, or patio with something handmade and unique.
