Lady Panthers Wrestling Team Builds to Big Moments
The Phillipsburg girls’ wrestling team competed at the MCL Tournament in WaKeeney on Friday, Jan. 30 and had a solid showing across several weight classes.
Freshman Mae Keef placed 3rd at 125 pounds, while sophomore Ana Schemper earned 3rd place at 130 pounds.
At 140 pounds, freshman Kynley Griffin added another 3rd-place finish for the Panthers. Freshman Jemma Thomas placed 4th in the 145-pound weight class, and sophomore Isabelle Epley finished 4th at 170 pounds.
Sophomore Kaitlyn McCreery led the team with a 2nd-place finish in the 190-pound weight class, rounding out a strong performance for Phillipsburg.
The Phillipsburg girls’ wrestling team competed at the Larned Varsity Girls Invitational on Jan. 31
The team used the event as a junior varsity opportunity to gain experience on the mat.
At 140 pounds, sophomore Hayleigh Watt finished 8th, battling through a competitive bracket. Junior Kihyna Steelsmith also wrestled at 140 pounds and turned in a strong showing, finishing in 4th.
The tournament gave the Panthers valuable mat time and experience as they continue their season.
The team competed at the Panther Classic at home on Friday, Feb. 6, and had a strong day on the mat, highlighted by three runner-up finishes. Senior Johnna Ebner earned 2nd place in her weight class, McCreery also placed 2nd with another solid performance. Griffin added a third 2nd-place finish for the Panthers, helping cap off a successful showing at the tournament.
On Friday, Feb. 13 and Saturday, Feb. 14, the Panthers competed at the super regional tournament in WaKeeney, where the top eight placers qualified for state.
At 115 pounds, sophomore Arianna Ebner placed 6th, while J. Ebner took 5th in the 155-pound weight class. At 140 pounds, Griffin finished 3rd, and in the 190-pound division, McCreery earned 2nd place.
With their regional performances, these Panthers have qualified for the state tournament set for Feb. 27 at Gross Memorial Coliseum in Hays.
