VanDerVeen to represent Logan at Sunflower State Spelling Bee
The Phillips County Spelling Bee was held at the Huck Boyd Center on February 4.
Thirty spellers representing Logan, Phillipsburg, and Thunder Ridge competed.
Representing Logan were 4th grader Macy Parks, 5th graders Keira Kallenberger and Leland Kibbee, 6th graders Treyson Brackney and Conner Gottschalk, 7th graders Kylah Brumbaugh and Zoe Tien, and 8th graders Gunnar Ashmore, Henry States, and Kinley VanDerVeen.
At the beginning of Round 3, only 9 spellers remained, including six students from Logan: Macy, Keira, Treyson, Conner, Henry, and Kinley. Macy, Henry, and Treyson were eliminated in round 5, tying for 6th place.
Five spellers remained at the beginning of round 8 including Keira, Conner, and Kinley. Keira was eliminated in this round, tying for 4th place.
At the beginning of round 9, only three spellers remained—Kinley and Conner from Logan and Valentina Navarro Rosales from Phillipsburg. Conner was eliminated in this round, giving him 3rd place.
Kinley and Valentina battled for five more rounds until Kinley spelled “oboe” and “grandeur” to become the 2026 Phillips County Champion.
Congratulations to Kinley and Conner and all of Logan’s spellers who represented our school in such an outstanding manner!
Kinley will be representing Phillips County in the Sunflower State Spelling Bee on March 21 at Kansas Wesleyan University.
