Held in Phillipsburg July 30-August 1, it’s the best pro rodeo in Kansas, said Ricky Solida, rodeo committee member and volunteer.
“We see a lot of world champions that compete in Phillipsburg,” he said. “It’s amazing how many cowboys and cowgirls who are ranked in the top fifteen in the PRCA world standings come to Phillipsburg.”
Top-notch personnel contribute to making the rodeo a good one, Solida said. Randy Corley returns as rodeo announcer, with Bob Edmonds making his first appearance as co-announcer. Beutler and Son Rodeo Co. will provide the bucking horses and bulls.
This year, a father/daughter duo will work the Phillipsburg rodeo. Rodeo clown Matt Merritt will provide the comedy, while his older daughter, Ruia Merritt, will be the specialty act. Ruia, who will be a high school senior this fall, will do a liberty act with her horses Comanche, Trigger, Bunny and Goose.
Returning as bullfighters are brothers Ryder and Roper Rich.
Family night at the rodeo is Thurs., July 30. Kids ages 12 and under get free admission with the purchase of an adult rodeo ticket. The free barbecue is the same night, making it a money-saving night for families. The free barbecue is sponsored by Farm Bureau Financial Services, High Plains Farm Credit, Phillips County Farm Bureau, Nutrien Ag Solutions, Phelps Memorial Health Center, Prairie Land Electric Cooperative, Sub Par Stockmans Association and Vanderveen Forage LLC.
Fans are asked to wear pink on the Thurs., July 30 night of rodeo for the annual Tough Enough to Wear Pink night, to bring awareness to people fighting cancer. Voluntary donations will be taken and 100 percent of donations are given to people in northern Kansas undergoing cancer treatment. For every fan wearing pink, the Phillipsburg Rodeo Association donates one dollar to the fund. Eight area businesses and organizations match the donation: A&A Distributing, Amber Wave, B&B Redimix, Inc., Blossoms and Butterflies, Farmers State Bank, W.B. DesJardins Fund, Rodgers and Associates and Witmer Drug.
The rodeo starts at 8 pm each night, July 30-August 1.
General admission tickets for Thurs., July 30 are $18 for adults and free for all children, 12 and under.
General admission tickets for Fri., July 31 and Sat., August 1 are $19 for adults and $13 for children, ages 3-12.
Reserved seating for all three nights is $22 for adults and $17 for children (on Fri. and Sat. nights).
Tickets will be sold in person beginning July 1 at Garrett Insurance (685 Third Street, Phillipsburg) and over the phone (785.543.2448).
