Museum News September 26, 2026
It was another busy week at the Hansen Museum, with student field trips, a Saturday sewing class, and plenty of activity throughout the Museum.
Logan’s fourth-grade students and a homeschool group from Phillips County visited the Museum for field trips this past week. Each group had plenty of time to explore Going Places and interact with the hands-on components throughout the exhibition. From experimenting with different forms of transportation to discovering how things move, the students were able to learn through play and hands-on exploration.
Following their time in the exhibition, the students took part in a tessellation activity. The younger students worked with wooden shapes, experimenting with how they could arrange and repeat the pieces to completely cover a surface without gaps or overlaps. It was a simple, hands-on way for them to discover how shapes can tessellate.
The older students took the idea a little further, learning that tessellations are all around us and are often found in everyday design and construction. Brick walls and tile floors are familiar examples, with repeating shapes fitting together to cover an area. After exploring several examples, the students had the opportunity to experiment with tessellations themselves and create their own repeating designs.
We thoroughly enjoyed having both groups at the Museum and are looking forward to another busy week of field trips. Six classes from Osborne and four classes from Northern Valley are scheduled to visit this week. We love having students in the Museum and watching them explore, experiment, and discover something new along the way.
The Museum is also enjoying a new connection with Logan students through the Logan Chamber of Commerce’s Business Buddies initiative. New this year, the program pairs local businesses with classes at the Logan elementary school. The Museum has been paired with Mrs. Kats’ second-grade class. We are currently displaying fall coloring pages created by the second graders on the Museum’s office glass doors. Their colorful artwork has been a fun addition to the Museum, and we look forward to getting to know our Business Buddies throughout the school year.
Creativity continued on Saturday when Janie Lowry led her Hello Fall! Table Runner Sewing Class. Participants spent the morning working on their projects while benefiting from Janie’s sewing experience and knowledge. Participant Mary Smith especially appreciated Janie’s ability to provide individualized attention throughout the class, complimenting both her knowledge and the personal attention she provided to each participant.
Our next class will be Intro to Oil Pastels with instructor Laurie Albin on October 24th. Participants will have an opportunity to explore this colorful and versatile medium while learning techniques for creating their own oil pastel artwork.
There is still plenty of time to experience Going Places at the Hansen Museum. This interactive transportation exhibition will remain on view through November 1st and offers visitors of all ages the opportunity to explore the science and technology behind the ways we travel by land, sea, and air. The Museum is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m.; Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 5 p.m.; and Sunday and holidays from 1 to 5 p.m. The Museum is handicapped accessible, and admission is always free courtesy of the Dane G. Hansen Foundation. For additional information, please call 785-689-4846 or visit www.hansenmuseum.org.
